Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) becomes most effective when communities come together. Across India, collective efforts have transformed villages, towns, and cities, turning water-scarce regions into self-reliant hubs of water security.
Problem: Severe drought, over-extraction of groundwater.
Community Action: RWH through contour trenches, percolation tanks, and strict water budgeting.
Result: Groundwater levels revived, agriculture flourished, reverse migration of youth.
Problem: Water scarcity & poverty.
Community Action: Built check dams, percolation tanks, and promoted watershed management.
Result: Village achieved water self-sufficiency, increased crop yield, and became a model for rural development.
Problem: Depleted water resources & desertification.
Community Action: Led by NGO Tarun Bharat Sangh, villagers restored hundreds of traditional johads (earthen check dams).
Result: Revived rivers, improved groundwater levels, increased agriculture productivity.
Problem: Urban water shortage & groundwater depletion.
Community Action: Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) installed rooftop RWH systems, recharge wells, and organized water audits.
Result: Improved groundwater recharge, reduced dependency on tankers, Indore became India's cleanest city with sustainable water management.
Problem: Water scarcity impacting women and agriculture.
Community Action: Women’s collectives (Jal Sahelis) trained in RWH techniques, led pond cleaning, and built recharge structures.
Result: Reduced water-fetching burden, improved village water availability, empowered women leadership.
